Community supported agriculture (CSA) is a partnership between the farmers and consumers, where consumers purchase a share of the farm’s produce in advance. Each member will get a share of the week’s harvest of vegetables and fruits in season, differing depending on size. The boxes or bags get delivered to each member’s door on a weekly basis. Many CSA members are involved with the production and distribution of the boxes and bags.

By joining this CSA, you’re signing up for vegetables, fruit, and flowers from Geist Farm. The season starts in June until the end of October, lasting for about 20 weeks. Unlike other CSA subscriptions, our boxes include a large variety of seasonal vegetables, fruits and flowers. Every week, we try to include some greens (lettuce or kale), a fruit (depends what’s ripe), a sack of potatoes (starting in the middle of July), zucchini, cucumbers and tomatoes regularly as well as the seasonal produce listed below. And, of course, flowers.

What’s Included

Here is a tentative list of the produce:

Lettuce, Radishes, Chard, Scallions, Kale, Kohlrabi, Peas, Globe Onions, Cucumber, Zucchini, Eggplant, Tomatoes, Basil, Cilantro, Corn, Green Beans, Winter Squash, Carrots, Fennel, Celery, Leek, Garlic, Eggplant, Beets, Potatoes, Rhubarb, Cherries, Apricots, Plums, Prunes, Peaches, Watermelon, Cantaloupe, Grapes, Apples, Pears.

As the season changes, the availability of the produce changes. Early on in the season, the produce is still very light. First, there are mainly lush greens, lettuce mix, herbs, cherries, and such. The boxes tend to get heavier as the season progresses and the availability of what is ripe changes. Later, we get into the potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, beets, apples, corn, winter squashes- making for real heavy loads.

Did you know?

There are over a dozen people making this CSA work. Lots of people and kids help out on Thursday, distribution and delivery, harvesting, washing and bunching, packing boxes, and delivering to town. Tuesdays mornings we work in the garden communally, weed, plant, pick fruit. It is a labor of love, gardening, and community.
